A 2019 review in PLOS ONE found some evidence for benefits in attention tasks. However, many studies have small sample sizes, short durations, and inconsistent methodology.
The honest summary: binaural beats are probably not magic, but some people genuinely find them useful for focus and relaxation. The mechanism may be partly physiological (brainwave entrainment) and partly behavioral (the audio signals a transition into focused work, similar to how putting on headphones helps people concentrate in an open office).
How to Try Them Effectively
If you want to experiment with binaural beats:
- Use stereo headphones. The effect does not work through speakers
- Start with alpha frequencies (10 Hz) for focused work sessions
- Try theta frequencies (6 Hz) for meditation or pre-sleep relaxation
- Use them consistently for 2-3 weeks before deciding if they help
- Do not use them while driving or operating equipment
