The research on binaural beats is genuinely mixed. Several small studies show modest improvements in attention, memory, and mood with alpha and theta frequency audio. A 2019 review in PLOS ONE found some evidence for benefits in attention tasks. However, many studies have small sample sizes, short durations, and inconsistent methodology.

The honest summary: binaural beats are probably not magic, but some people genuinely find them useful for focus and relaxation. The mechanism may be partly physiological (brainwave entrainment) and partly behavioral (the audio signals a transition into focused work, similar to how putting on headphones helps people concentrate in an open office).
